Atheist Argument

Version 1
(Version 1 of the "Thousands of religions can't all be right" argument)

There are thousands of religions across history, each claiming to hold the ultimate truth. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Mormons — and countless others before them — all insist that their scriptures, their prophets, and their gods are the real ones. But these claims directly contradict each other. Jesus cannot both be the Son of God and not be; reincarnation cannot both be true and false. At best, only one faith could be correct — but the far more likely conclusion is that they are all human inventions.

The fact that most people simply inherit their religion from the culture they were born into shows this clearly. A child born in Saudi Arabia will almost certainly be Muslim. A child born in India will almost certainly be Hindu. A child born in Italy will likely be Catholic. If God truly revealed Himself in one faith, why does geography determine belief more than divine truth?

The sheer diversity of religions, each with sincere believers and holy books, is strong evidence that religion is not a revelation from above, but a projection from below — cultures creating gods in their own image. Thousands of religions can’t all be right. But they can all be wrong.
