(Version 1 of the "problem of animal suffering" argument)

A baby elephant falls into a deep hole and cannot climb out. It will starve there, terrified, with no lesson to learn, no soul to build, no choice to make. Or picture wild animals fleeing a forest fire — running with everything they have, thinking they might survive, until the flames close in and burn them alive. This is routine in nature. If you had the power to stop it, of course you would. But God does not. What kind of loving Creator designs a world where innocent creatures suffer like this every day for no reason at all?
